Labour pledge free health care for over 65’s in England
It’s conference season for all the political parties. Right now, it is Labours turn and so far, there has been a whole range of debates roaring. But the one that caught our eye was a pledge from Labour to give free health care to those who are aged 65 and over, and to those who really need it.
ProCare Nursing are a health care provider and service the south west of England. It will be interesting to see how things will unfold over the next few months, from Brexit proceedings to a possible general election, to a possible re-call of Parliament, either way you look at it exciting times are ahead good or bad.
But pledges like the one made by Labour at their conference will need to be debated in Parliament, so we can only hope that will happen. Things like the financing of this pledge will need to be debated because free care will come at a cost to taxpayers and no doubt other political parties will have something to say about it, including the general public.
We also have to consider the ageing population, in June this year we talked about the need for 20,000 extra carers by 2034, if Labour were to make healthcare free for over 65’s then they would be funding that care for many years to come as people live longer, the costs could be huge funding free health care.
There are obvious benefits to delivering free health care, a lot of elderly people cannot afford health care in older age, this pledge would safeguard a lot of vulnerable older people, however, the practicalities of putting a policy through like this would need to be carefully considered.
